Bad news: No more ‘Good News’

Being the voice of a community, a beacon of truth or simply a means of sharing the good news of your family, friends and neighbors is only the result of hard work and sacrifice that only those journalists who have dedicated their lives to can fully understand.

It comes with a heavy heart to learn that the “Good News,” a monthly publication dedicated solely to the good things that occur within Crittenden County and the positive side of the people who live here, has published its last edition after an enjoyable and eventful twelve and a half years.

In her final opinion column, Editor Mary Kelly said she started the publication under some skepticism from what she said “many people telling me we would never survive with just printing “good” news.”

Without a shadow of a doubt Mary Kelly and her daughter, Stacy Reece proved those skeptics wrong, and for well over a decade they were able to share the very best of the people who call Crittenden County their home.

The “Good News” was a refreshing change to the negative news of the community, or the sometimes boring stories that come out of our city and county governments. The “Good News” admittedly put a smile on the faces of those readers who wanted to read about the positives of their communities, whether it be a local baby shower, the life of a local farmer, recognizing the positive accomplishments of community leaders or stories about the good things going on within our local schools.

While those of us who report the news and events of Crittenden County in a different way within the pages of the Evening Times, a daily newspaper that has served Crittenden County since 1930, it comes with great sadness to learn Mary Kelly and her daughter have decided to “put their paper to bed” for a final time and move on “to new adventures.”

We never considered the “Good News” as our competition but rather a worthy publication that played an important role in informing Crittenden Countians with a positive and informative viewpoint.

As Crittenden County’s sole publication we will certainly strive to fill this void and certainly encourage the very loyal “Good News” readers to provide us with the “good news” they shared with Mary Kelly.

With that said, let us commend Mary Kelly, her daughter, Stacy Reece and all those associated with the “Good News” for all their accomplishments and hard work. At the same time we wish them and their families only the best in the days ahead.
