Marion senior recognized for scholastic achievements

www.msd3.org Marion High School Principal Lincoln Daniels has announced that MHS senior Ben Baser has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (MNSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.

Baser is the son of Rhonda and Curt Baser of Marion.

He is a member of the MHS National Honor Society, President of the Student Council, Mu Alpha Theta and FBLA. Baser is also a member of the MHS tennis team and the Praise Band and Worship Leader at Victory Baptist Church in West Memphis He is also a member of the MHS 30 Club, comprised of students who scored a 30 or better of the ACT. Baser posed a score of 34 of the test. A perfect ACT score is 36.

Currently, Baser is taking AP Calculus, AP Computer Science and APWorld History. He has taken six additional AP courses beginning in his sophomore year and maintains greater than a 4.0 GPA.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Baser scored a 212 on the test.

The cutoff was 213.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as they key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Although Baser has not decided which college he will attend, he says it will probably out of state. He plans to major in Engineering but is undecided about which discipline.
