Three West Memphis City Council seats went up for grabs during the Tuesday elections. Two incumbents won re-election and one new face will represent Ward 3. The second seats in all the odd numbered wards were contested.

Councilman Tracy Catt garnered nearly three quarters of the votes in the match-up with challenger Alex Dunlap, winning 1637 to 614. From the beginning returns reflected a solid gap for the incumbent. Catt made himself visible, engaging early voters at the county courthouse. The Councilman did not rest with the margin reported from early voting but expressed relief about an hour later.

“I’m glad for the results,” said Catt. “I’ve worked hard and am ready to continue to work for the best for West Memphis.”

Willis Mondy defended his seat against Al Felton for the second time. Incumbent Mondy beat two different candidates in his last three outings for the second seat in Ward 5. Mondy tallied 495 votes to Felton’s 381. Mondy took nothing for granted.

“I campaigned like I was 20 percent behind,” said Mondy. “People need to see you and hear from you and that’s what I did.”

Businessman Taz Tyrone vacated his position in Ward 3. Well known West Memphis figures Don Christian and Wayne Croom vied to see who would slide into that seat as the new replacement.

Croom recently retired from Langston Bag. Christian had headed the Civic Auditorium in West Memphis. Both candidates were at election headquarters to see the returns for themselves. Croom won by almost 200 on nearly 1400 votes.

“I am grateful to the voters, and look forward to getting started on City Council,” said Croom.
