Oliver Slaton Woollard, Jr.
Oliver Slaton Woollard, Jr.
went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016. He was 94.
Slaton was born on the Woollard family farm in Clarkedale, Arkansas on Dec.
27, 1921. He graduated from Marion, Arkansas High School and then attended Kemper Military School in Southern Missouri where he learned to fly airplanes and later enlisted in the U.S.
Army Air Corps. He was an avid golfer and hunter, spending many hours either on the golf course or in the woods of Eastern Arkansas. He also loved to watch college football and basketball, and was considered an excellent Bridge player.
He married Frances Dockery Banks, also of Clarkedale on June 14, 1947. They were married 54 years, until Frances’ death on Oct. 5, 2002. Slaton and Frances were blessed with five children, Llewlee McKinney of Ellijay, Georgia, Henry “Hank” Woollard of Destin, Florida, twins Oliver Woollard of Pensacola, Florida and Frances Jones of Rockford, Tennessee, and Anne Hogan of Champaign, Illinois. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Slaton’s college education was interrupted by World War II and the Korean Conflict, but he eventually earned a business degree from Florida State University in 1955 while still on active duty for the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force trained Slaton to pilot multi-engine aircraft and to be a weather forecaster, a combination of skills resulting in an assignment on Guam, flying weather reconnaissance as a “Typhoon Chaser.” His final Air Force assignments were manning the Weather Station at Memphis and then teaching ROTC at Memphis State University. He retired from the Air Force in 1963 after 21 years of service having earned the rank of Major and the distinction of Command Pilot.
The challenges and dangers Slaton faced as an Air Force pilot pale in comparison to his lifelong struggle and victory over alcoholism. He joined Alcoholics Anonymous in the early 1970s, achieved sobriety in 1974 and remained sober from then on.
From his desire to help others break their addictions, he studied to become an alcohol and substance abuse counselor. After being certified by the State of Tennessee he served at Harbor House in Memphis.
Slaton and Frances moved to Gulf Pines, near Destin in 1987. They were active members of Grace Lutheran Church and associate members of Hope Lutheran Church in Santa Rosa Beach.
Slaton was also very active in the Destin Kiwanis Club. He continued his counseling work well into his 80’s, serving at the Bridgeway Center in Fort Walton Beach. After 2004 and 2005 hurricanes twice heavily damaged his home, Slaton moved into an apartment at the Azalea Trace Retirement Community in Pensacola where he resided until his death. A memorial service in his honor will be held at Azalea Trace at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28.
Suggested memorials in lieu of flowers are Harbor House in Memphis, Grace Lutheran Church, Hope Lutheran Church, Florida, the Kiwanis Club of Destin, and the Bridgeway Center of Okaloosa County.

Herbert; her father, R. G.
Herbert; sister, Lois Fowler; and two brothers, Paul Herbert and Robert Herbert.
