AWM students enjoy ‘book tasting’ event
Feed your mind and your body with a book and a snack
West Memphis School District Students at the Academies of West Memphis are being introduced to the new books in Cana Able's classroom library. Students were invited to a 'book tasting,' where they were seated at tables complete with tablecloths, centerpieces, snacks and a menu of a variety of new books.
Students were allowed three minutes to 'taste' each book at the table by reading the blurb, scanning the first few paragraphs and noting characteristics of the book.
Students then made a decision as to whether or not each book was one they would be interested in reading.
'The students seemed to really enjoy the ambiance of the 'restaurant' style,' said Able. 'A few students told me they normally choose a book by the cover alone and don't get a lot of
time to really choose a good book. It gave my students an opportunity to preview books for short
amounts of time.
'Also, the students were clearly getting to know what they find interesting in reading material. I have another shipment of books coming in soon and students are already asking if we can do the 'book-tasting'
again.'
