With a goal of honoring the memory of a long-time Crittenden County educator and loved one, the friends and family of Cheryl Jackson Cox have recently established the Cheryl Cox Memorial Scholarship at ASU Mid-South.

The $500 scholarship, which recognizes Cox's educational impact on her family and the students she taught, will be awarded each year to an ASU Mid-South student planning to pursue a career in elementary education. Cheryl Cox was a native of West Memphis and graduated high school at the age of 16. She pursued higher education at ASU Jonesboro completing her Bachelor's Degree in just 3 years.

At the age of 19, she signed her first teaching contract with the Marion School District. Cox spent 37 years as a beloved teacher at Avondale Elementary School. She also taught Sunday school at New Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in West Memphis. Cox passed away on Feb. 19, 2015, of cancer at the age of 56. She would have been 58 tomorrow.

“We are honored and that her family and friends have chosen ASU Mid-South for this tribute to Cheryl,” said Diane Hampton, Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement. “She obviously touched many lives, both in her personal and professional life, and this scholarship will give others the opportunity to do the same.”
