Crittenden County 4-H wins big at the NEA District Fair

Large local contingent brings home bevy of awards

ralphhardin@gmail.com Local youth from the Crittenden County 4-H had standout showings at the recent Northeast Arkansas District Fair.

“Our 4-H members and families are always excited about showcasing their hard work around fair season,” said County Extension Agent Cynthia Rorie, the local 4-H director. “We had 19 youth participate in the 2016 Northeast Arkansas District Fair and every one of them came home with a ribbon.”

Crittenden County 4-H members swept the 4-H poultry chain competition; bringing home Reserve Grand Champion, Grand Champion, and four 1st Place blue ribbons.

“What is the Arkansas 4-H poultry chain?” Rorie asked for those not in the know. “This project is designed to teach 4-H members recommended management practice for raising and maintaining a backyard laying flock. 4-H members receive 25 to 50 day-old chicks and agree to properly feed and care for the pullets.”

Poultry chain participants can refer to the poultry chain publication, 4-H poultry project books, and extension agents for guidance on proper care and maintenance of poultry.

“Along with our Poultry Chain winners we had two 4-H members compete in livestock judging, four members competed in the rabbit show and showmanship, and four competed in the Youth Family Living competitions including: photography, handicraft, sewing, and more than art,” said Rorie.

She added that the 4-H is always looking for new members. Anyone who would like to learn more about Crittenden County 4H is invited to contact Cynthia Rorie at (870) 7393239 or crorie@uaex.edu. You can also follow Crittenden County 4-H on Facebook at facebook.com/CrittendenC ounty4H.
