Senior Night this week for WMCS

Black Knights will wrap 2016 season at home

Sports Editor West Memphis Christian will send off four senior members of their football team on Friday night at Knights Field II.

In Jameson Smith, Evin Cooper, Jackson Lancaster and Hunter Weathers, the Black Knights know that they’ll be graduating good football players, but also quality people, as well.

“This has been an excellent group to get to know over the past few years,” said third-year West Memphis Christian head coach Darrow Anderson.

“Evin and Jameson have been with me for three years now and they’ve both been such a pleasure to coach because they work so hard, they’re dedicated to what they do.

Hunter came out this year for the first time and he’s played really well, he’s one of our leading tacklers, he always plays hard. Jackson has been hurt since week 4, and we’ve missed him on and off the field.

They’ve just been good for the team, having them around and I can’t say how much I appreciate them.”

Friday night will also be homecoming for West Memphis Christian, their first in their new on-campus football stadium that opened in August.

When it comes down to kickoff, the Black Knights (1-8 overall, 1-4 district) will be hosting Tipton-Rosemark Academy (4-4 overall, 1-3 district).

The Rebels are not a district game for the Black Knights, but Anderson knows how important this outing is for his team.

“We really want to finish strong this week,” says the coach. “They run a Wing-T on offense, so a lot of the stuff they do is like a buck sweep, they love the counter, they’ll bring it to the weak side, and they throw the play-action off of the running game, and they do a good job with it.”

Tipton-Rosemark has won two out of its last three games, but lost last week to St. George’s, 42-7. Their season-high point total came on September 9 in a 62-22 win against Macon Road Baptist.

“They have a powerful running back, with a good line that gets a good push,” Anderson explains.

“They’re not a big spreadit- out and throw it all over the place. Defensively, they’re in a four-man front with two high safeties.

They’ll mix that up, but that’s usually what they do. They love to bring pressure, especially blitzing off the edges. Our challenge will be to hold off and try to pop some long runs on them.”

The senior football and cheerleaders will be held at 6:45 p.m., prior to kickoff.

The presentation of the homecoming court will be held at halftime of the game.
