The Zombies are coming… to help you get in shape

Boys & Girls Club to hold 5K with twist to die for

ralphhardin@gmail.com For those of you whose familiarity with zombies begins and ends with the 1960s horror classic “Night of the Living Dead,” you may not have noticed that zombies are everywhere these days.

Thanks to the pop cultural phenomenon that is “The Walking Dead” TV series — along with dozens of other movies, shows, books and games featuring the flesh-hungry ghouls — everyone, it seems, is now a zombie fan.

There’s even a T-shirt that reads, “If the zombies chase us, I’m tripping you.” Because, you see, you don’t have to be the fastest — you just have to not be the slowest.

But while the threat of a Zombie Apocalypse is mere fiction (right?), those with the guts to see what it might be like to get a taste of a zombie-filled reality will get their chance.

The Boys & Girls Club of Crittenden County is getting into the Halloween spirit with the “Zombie Run! 5K” on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Can you survive five kilometers of zombies? How well will you fare when the undead roam the countryside? Here’s your opportunity to find out.

You can walk or run (you might want to run) the “Zombie Run! 5K,” which starts and ends at the Boys & Girls Club at Worthington Park in West Memphis. The run starts at 8:30 p.m., so the darkness will only add to the spooky atmosphere.

Times will be recorded and awards will be issued for the best times by age group. There is a $25 entry fee is you pre-register (which included an eventthemed

T-shirt). It’s $30 on

the day of the run.

Dress up as one of the living dead or just try to avoid the ones haunting the course, terrorizing the neighborhood.

If you’ve ever needed motivation to exercise, perhaps the looming threat of zombies will get your feet moving. For more information, call (870) 735-1658.

And don’t be scared. Besides, they’re just zombies.

They’re not clowns.
