It’s Jazz. It’s Gospel. It’s all for a good cause. The Memphis/Crittenden County Chapter of the Philander Smith Alumni will showcase talent in and upcoming Jazz and Gospel Extravaganza. The concert aims to strike a high note raising scholarship funds to benefit the diverse student body at the college in Little Rock.

Two performers in particular have ties to Crittenden County and are warming up for their performances for the Methodist church school.

Aljun Newson-Jones will grace the extravaganza. Her love for the Lord and music is heard in her singing. She graduated from Hughes High School, and has received honorable mention in Metropolitan Opera Auditions.

Sandra Bray performs Gospel Jazz. Born in Anthonyville and raised in West Memphis the proud daughter of Solon Levell Anthony and Eleanor B. Anthony, Bray is a member of Old St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and active in its music ministry. Her close experience with the Lord led her to sing only for the Him.

The Centenary United Methodist Church, 584 E. McLemore Ave., Memphis, provides the venue in its sanctuary. The beautiful musical praises will waft through the nave beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21. For the $15 tickets contact Extravaganza Co-Chair Dr. Lessdoll Twillie at 7330505 in Marion, or Ardre Nell Anthony at the Anthony Funeral Home, 135 S. 16th Street, West Memphis, or by phone at 735-8680.
