City going solar to power signs

Welcome signs highlighted the Tourism Director’s report at the September West Memphis Advertising and Promotions Commission meeting. Plans are set for locating the signs on top of the levee for inbound Interstate drivers to see. But Jim Jackson’s report illuminated Commissioners about needed changes.

Power lines to the designated sign spots turn out to be too far off to reach the signs. Expenses for the project would skyrocket as one power line would have to be strung across the Interstate. Long-held hopes for welcome signage were not snuffed out, however.

Jackson provided and update.

“We are getting there,” said Jackson. “The Design and Review Commission approved it. We are still waiting for the permit for the Corps of Engineers.

They assured me it would be here soon.”

Commissioners then heard the news about the solar solution.
