DeSoto invades Knight Field II for showdown

Third-year head football coach Darrow Anderson doesn’t believe that his team’s game against DeSoto School on Friday night is a must-win.

But it’s close.

So it is for the 0-2 Black Knights, who open their district schedule at home on Friday night at 7 p.m.

“As far as Friday night goes, it’s a big game. It’s honestly, basically a playoff game for us,” Anderson explained on Wednesday morning. “We really do need a win. I think we’re still learning how to practice and get mentally prepared for four days during the week.”

West Memphis Christian stayed competitive with North Delta in their opener before falling 39-12, but allowed a 27-point second quarter en route to a 40-0 loss last week against Fayette Academy.

“I think against North Delta we came out and played well, just shot ourselves in the foot at times,” says the coach. “I thought last week, we let things get away from us in that second quarter, and we just can’t have that.”

West Memphis Christian topped DeSoto last year in week 3, holding on for a 19-12 win after leading 197 most of the night.

Anderson says that while the year is different, he still expects the Thunderbirds to be similar to past years.

“They’re gonna be wellcoached. They always are.

They always give you 100 percent effort, they always play hard, and sometimes they win and sometimes they lose. I know they’ll be physical, and I know that they’re gonna run their four, five or six plays that they run, and plan on beating you doing it,” Anderson says.

The Thunderbirds enter play on Friday night at 0-2 after a 25-0 loss to Carroll Academy before a 35-6 defeat last week by Deer Creek.
