West Memphis City government will soon be connected better than ever, thanks to a new phone system. Approval for the new system breezed through city council during the council’s July 21 meeting.

City Council referred bids to the Utility Department for consideration.

Mayor Johnson told city council it was time to update the phone system into the computer age and laid out the proper course of action.

“It’s a new modern phone system for the entire city,” said Mayor Johnson. “The one I’m using is 40 years old. I suggest we refer them to the utility for disposition.”

Current phone systems are strung across buildings.

There is a separate phone system at each office in the city from the airport in the west to the shop on East Jackson. The new fiber optic system ties it all together for inter department

communication.

Once on the floor, Councilor James Pulliaum called on the mayor to reiterate the $87,000 project details for the public. The Utilities department will oversee the project and foot the bill.

“This a totally new phone system for the entire city administration,” said Johnson. “It includes city hall, the utility and the airport.

All our departments have to do to talk to each other is pick up the phone and call the extension in other departments. “ The utility department is now on the line to make the call to secure the bid for the new system.
