Candlelight vigil for teen killed in crash leads to act of kindness

ralphhardin@gmail.com Young Max was playing with friends at Worthington Park when they saw something out of the ordinary.

The youngsters recognized a classmate from Bragg Elementary and asked what was going on, only to find out it was a candlelight vigil in honor of Brent Price, a young man recently killed in an automobile accident near the park and a fundraiser for the family.

A few minutes later, Max came back with $3 and some change he had collected from his piggy bank.

After being thanked for his thoughtfulness, he left, only to return with more.

“That was so sweet of him,” noted a woman who witnessed this act of kindness. “He came again and said he got another dollar from his Dad. He left, came back again with some change he said he found in his couch, came back again with some change he found in his Dad’s car — we thought, ‘wow, what a great kid.’ Well, the kid wasn’t finished. After the candlelight vigil was over, Max came back with $5 and said that was from his Dad.

“We praised this wonderful child and told him how much the family would appreciate him,” she said. “I hugged him and he left.

There was five or six of us standing around talking after everyone else had left. All of a sudden this sweet face pops up again.”

This time he had his wallet.

He said, “I asked my dad and he said it was OK. I want to donate this.”

Max then produced a $20 bill.

“Tears welled up in all of our eyes. ‘You know God is going to bless you,” she said.

His reply: “I was saving up for a guitar but God told me to bring it because this family needed it.”

“Ten years old and so thoughtful and so kind,” she said. “He touched us in more ways than he will ever imagine.”

Max ended up donating about $30 total.

“This is one of the best examples of a giving heart I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I asked him and his dad’s name, and I’ve sent his dad a message telling him how much we appreciated his wonderful son. What a sweetheart.”

So, if you see this kid out playing around Worthington Park or see him anywhere give him a big high five.
