William Sanders “Sully” Carter, Sr.

William Sanders “Sully” Carter, Sr., at the age of 93, peacefully passed away on June 29, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce McKinney Carter. Sully is survived by his children, William Sanders Carter, Jr.

(Ann) of Jackson, Mississippi and Scott McKinney Carter (Linda) of Memphis, Tennessee.

William Sanders Carter was born on February 4, 1923, in Clarkedale, Arkansas.

Marion, Arkansas became his home in 1929 where he and his family attended Marion United Methodist Church. He graduated from Marion High School after briefly attending Kemper Military School.

Sully attended Columbia University and graduated from Mississippi State University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Sully fell in love with Joyce McKinney Carter and they were married in 1956.

Sully was a devoted and proud resident of Marion Arkansas. He served on many boards and committees: Crittenden Regional Hospital Board of Directors, Saint Francis Levee District, Citizens Bank of Marion, Crittenden County Heart Association, Agricultural Council of Arkansas and Federal Land Bank Bureau.

After 33 years of service on Marion’s City Council, Sully was awarded the Marion Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. He was described by many as a humanitarian, philanthropist and good Samaritan. Mr.

Carter enjoyed playing tennis, watching college football with friends and driving the family motorhome to many Razorback games. He was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. If you knew Sully you knew his mantra of “Happy Days.”

Sully was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Ball Carter and Rebecca Danner Carter. He leaves five grandchildren, Kathleen Elisabeth Carter of New York, New York, Suzanne Carter Shaw (David) of Athens, Georgia, Rebecca Carter Tisher (Charles) of Mobile, Alabama, William McKinney Carter of Asheville, North Carolina and William Ross Sanders Carter of Jackson, Mississippi. He leaves one great-grand child, Charles David Tisher, III. A special thank you and recognition to Sully’s neighbors, Danny and Sherry Chrestman of Marion, Arkansas, whom have been dedicated and loving friends.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, July 2 at Crittenden Memorial Park. Pastor Richard Rieves will officiate.

Gary Graham, 67, of West Memphis went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Karen Suiter Graham; a daughter, Amanda Leigh Graham; a grandson, Ayden Graham Jones; a granddaughter, Lola Belle Holmes; and two sisters, Lynda Gayle Robbins, and Emma Gene Wallin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Lola Graham; and two sisters, Dorothy Wright and Sandra Hatchett.

Gary was a dedicated husband, father, poppa, and brother. He was a member of Avondale Missionary Baptist Church in West Memphis and a member of the VFW. He served in the Vietnam War for the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Vice President for Bank of West Memphis and retired as a programmer analyst for Regions Bank.

Memorials may be made to the Avondale Missionary Baptist Church or to the National Parkinson Foundation.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 10 to 11 a.m.

at Avondale Missionary Baptist Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. with interment at Crittenden Memorial Park in Marion.

Gary Graham
