Shirley Ann Hoard was born May 4, 1955, in Crawfordsville, Arkansas, the fourth of 11 children to Martha Mae Hoard and George Hoard Jr. She passed away peacefully on May 30, 2016, with her family by her side.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Washington, she embarked on a 20-year career with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

Shirley was a loving and devoted mother to her three children and a doting grandmother of four.

She is preceded in death by her parents and by brothers, Joe Hoard, Mark Hoard and Aaron Hoard. She is survived by sisters, Rose Hoard and Patricia Hoard; brothers, Roy Hoard (married to Angela Hoard), George “Cookie” Hoard III, Sammie Hoard (Susie Hoard), Jimmy Hoard and Michael Hoard (LaTonia Hoard); cousins Ezzie Johnson and Eugene Hoard; her son Zaron Hoard; daughters Shanyanika Burton (Amaar Burton) and Tiesa McElroy; grandsons Zaquai, Zion and Zavae; and granddaughter Anissa.

A memorial service will be held at First A.M.E. Church in Seattle on Monday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m., followed by an interment ceremony at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to TheColorOfAutism.org.
