Volunteers and students gathered for the annual Crittenden County Literacy Council banquet.

Being school graduation time and students picking up diplomas, some adult literacy students picked up recognition for their hard work over the last year. The luncheon meeting held at a Southland Gaming and Racing hosted the annual gathering.

Crittenden County Literacy Coordinator Thomas Schlauch received rousing applause as told the audience that the local program ranked tops in the state in one cate- gory during 2016.

“Now for the news,” said Schlauch. “At the Carpenter Conference on Education in Little Rock last week, the Literacy Council of Crittenden County was awarded a certificate for the highest retention rate in the state.”

The county literary councils recognized students for

their hard work over the

year and the volunteer tutors with AmeriCorps received certificates too. Two students took certificates for completing the program. Awards were also handed out to students for the most hours, best effort, most improved. Three volunteers tied in logging the most hours as tutors and a pair were also recognized for outstanding public outreach.
