Marion students earn high marks in regional competition

MHS, MJHS math whizzes shine

Marion School District Students from Marion High and Marion Junior High Schools attended the Regional ACTM (Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics) contest at ASU Mid-South on March 5. Students competed in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, Statistics or Calculus.

Of the Marion students attending, 17 either placed in the top three or received honorable mentions in six categories.

Marion Junior High students Jason Lay won a 3rd place in Algebra I, followed by Ricardo Ledzema with an honorable mention.

In Geometry, Jackson English took second-place while Wesley Barrett placed third. Rebecca Bennett earned an honorable mention. All MJHS students are in Dana Jones’ math classes.

MHS math teacher Tracy Long’s students piled up a lot of wins in the Algebra II and Statistics divisions.

Claire Bunn won a first place trophy while Kashti Shah took second.

Her students garnered four awards in Statistics.

Mariah Odom set the pace with a first place win.

Classmate Benjamin Baser took the second-place title.

Winning honorable mentions were Christopher O’Neal and Gabi Catt.

It was students in David Horton’s Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus turn to shine.

Maggie Aureli and Morgan Masengale won second- and third-place honors in Trigonometry.

Viricia Jones and Joshua Harris received honorable mentions.

From Horton’s Calculus class, Kinal Mangukiya took third-place and Cole Bledsoe received an honorable mentions. In all, 28 Marion students competed in the event.

Those who won a firstplace in their category are invited to participate at the state level. That competition will be held in Conway on April 23.
