West Memphis Sports Hall of Famer passes away

Mike McCoy dead at 62 Michael Charles McCoy, a former West Memphis native and professional football player, died last Saturday.

McCoy, 62, attended Wonder and West Memphis High Schools and was among the first class of inductees into the West Memphis Sports Hall of Fame last September.

McCoy played football at the University of Colorado and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round (72nd player overall) of the 1976 NFL Draft. McCoy played in 110 games for the Packers from 1976-83, starting 97.

He had 13 interceptions and five fumble recoveries and played on the Packers' 1982 playoff team. He also returned kicks.

After retirement from the NFL, McCoy moved to Lake Tahoe, Calif., where he worked as an athletic trainer. He then returned to Colorado where he finished his degree. McCoy worked for the University of Colorado for 15 years before retiring in 2002.

McCoy was diagnosed with dementia in 2007 from the numerous concussions he sustained during his time in the NFL.

He is survived by his wife Janet; two daughters Angela and Shantel and one granddaughter MacKenzie.
