AWM teacher elected to national social studies board

Hunter selected for 3- year term on NCSS

West Memphis School District Academies of West Memphis teacher Marjorie Hunter was recently elected to a three-year term to the Board of Directors for the National Council for Social Studies.

Hunter, in her 16th year as a social studies teacher at AWM, will represent secondary teachers for issues concerning social studies in the U.S. She is the only representative from Arkansas.

'I'm very excited about representing not only West Memphis, but also Arkansas,' said Hunter.

Hunter was required to give a two-minute speech at the organization's national meeting in New Orleans in November 2015 in front of delegates from all 50 states before the election took place.

'It was a little nervewracking to get up in front of that many people and make a speech,' Hunter said with a grin. 'One of the things I'm really looking forward to is the opportunity to promote and advocate social studies. All too often social studies get forgotten or tossed aside.

There are a lot of interdisciplinary things that go on in a social studies frame.'

Hunter previously served on the Arkansas Council for Social Studies and she served six years on the Archive Committee for Social Studies.

The NCSS is the leading resource for professionals who seek social studies knowledge, collegiality and learning opportunities through their careers. It also seeks to increase professional development opportunities to strengthen content knowledge and enhance the effectiveness of social studies teaching.
